The Austrian motorway vignette (Autobahnvignette) is a mandatory toll pass required for using Austria's motorway and expressway network. It applies to all motor vehicles with a maximum permissible total weight of up to 3.5 tonnes. The vignette grants unlimited access to all toll-liable motorways (Autobahnen) and expressways (Schnellstraßen) in Austria, with the exception of certain special toll sections such as the Brenner Pass, Arlberg Tunnel, and Karawanken Tunnel.
The vignette system has been in place since 1997 and is managed by ASFINAG (Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft), the state-owned company responsible for building, operating, and financing Austria's motorway network. Revenue from vignette sales is reinvested directly into infrastructure maintenance and development.
Since 2023, the digital vignette has become the preferred format. It is linked directly to your vehicle's licence plate number and stored in a central database, eliminating the need to physically affix a sticker to your windscreen.
Austria offers three types of vignettes, differing in validity period and price. Choosing the right type depends on how frequently and for how long you travel on Austrian motorways.

Full Pricing OverviewSince 2018, ASFINAG has offered the digital vignette, which eliminates the need to physically affix a sticker to your vehicle. The digital vignette is linked directly to your vehicle's licence plate number and stored in a central database. Compliance is checked automatically by cameras at toll points.
Activation Period: The digital vignette can be purchased up to 18 days in advance. The start date is freely selectable.
Licence Plate Accuracy: The plate number must be entered exactly as it appears on the vehicle, including the country code for foreign vehicles.
No Printout Required: A confirmation email is sent but does not need to be carried in the vehicle.
Not all vehicles require a vignette. The following exemptions are legally defined:
Not all roads in Austria are subject to the vignette requirement. Federal roads (Bundesstraßen, B-roads) and regional roads are generally toll-free. Only motorways (A) and expressways (S) require a vignette.
Exception: Some sections of federal roads that serve as alternative routes to motorways may also be subject to tolls.
More on Exemptions in FAQDriving without a valid vignette on toll-liable roads is an administrative offence subject to a replacement toll (Ersatzmaut). Failure to pay the replacement toll may result in formal penalty proceedings.
