Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most important questions about the Austrian motorway vignette.

Do I need to affix the vignette to my vehicle?

For the digital vignette, no affixing is required — it is linked to your licence plate. For the sticker vignette, it must be affixed inside the windscreen, top left in the driver's field of vision.

Can I transfer the vignette to another vehicle?

No. Each vignette is valid for one vehicle only. The digital vignette is tied to a specific licence plate; the sticker vignette may not be transferred from one vehicle to another.

What happens if I entered the wrong licence plate?

Contact ASFINAG immediately after purchase. A correction may be possible within a short time window, but is not guaranteed. Incorrect entries may incur a fee.

Does the vignette cover special toll sections like the Brenner?

No. Special toll sections such as the Brenner (A13), Arlberg Tunnel (S16), or Karawanken Tunnel (A11) are not included in the vignette. These are charged separately.

Do I need a vignette as an electric vehicle driver?

Currently (until end of 2025), purely electric vehicles are exempt from the vignette requirement. However, plug-in hybrids do require a vignette. Check the current rules before your trip.

How far in advance can I buy the digital vignette?

The digital vignette can be purchased up to 18 days in advance. The start date is freely selectable.

What is the replacement toll and how much is it?

The replacement toll is €120 and is payable if you are stopped on a toll-liable road without a valid vignette. Failure to pay can result in a fine of up to €3,000.

Can I return or cancel a vignette?

Digital vignettes can be cancelled under certain circumstances if the start date has not yet been reached. Sticker vignettes generally cannot be returned.

What do I do if my sticker vignette is damaged or stolen?

You can apply for a replacement vignette from ASFINAG. This incurs a processing fee of €12 plus the price of the original vignette. The replacement is valid for the remaining validity of the original.

Is the Austrian vignette valid in other countries?

No. The Austrian vignette is valid exclusively in Austria. Other countries such as Switzerland, Slovenia, or the Czech Republic have their own vignette systems.

Do I need to carry the digital vignette confirmation email?

No. The digital vignette is automatically checked via the licence plate. A printout or the email does not need to be carried in the vehicle.

What if I forget to buy a vignette and am already on the motorway?

Exit the motorway at the next junction and purchase a vignette at a petrol station or online. Do not continue without a valid vignette — control cameras will record your licence plate.
